We are currently experiencing problems with our group's website. These problems will either be resolved or it will be fixed on our new website.

Current Workday Notice - 5th September 2020

We will be holding a workday this Saturday 5th September 2020 from 10:30 at Lower Newgrange (Staleen, Donore, Co. Meath)

Our work has building up the stonewall canal bank, above Lock 3.

Painting of the installed Lockgates in this section has been carried out also.

We provide free magazines, produced by our parent group and give them to all takers, drop by if such might take your fancy.

Boyne Navigation - I.W.A.I.

Books of possible interest:

A book was launched earlier in 2017 titled "The River Boyne". It documents the authors journey down the course of the Boyne (from source to sea) by boat. It heavily features the Boyne Navigation on this trip and includes some insightful information (historical and current) about it. Its available to purchase here (Link updated - May 2018).

Our parent group (Inland Waterways Association of Ireland) have published a book (Updated in May 2018) to celebrate the 60th anniversary since it's founding.

The Boyne Currach is a local group who have published a book about the traditional boat to the Boyne area, a Coirce.

T.V. appearances

We had RTÉ's Nationwide programme along for a day back in 2016. They based their programme from the Oldbridge Sealock - Lock 1. They filmed our group working there and took trip up to Oldbridge Guardlock - Lock 2. The programme aired in the lead up to Heritage Week 2016. IrishTV visited our group, aired the piece and have it available on their website Episode 16. I have a copy available to view here. It was felt that all the stops were pulled out with this production by our group. The original programme can be viewed here The programme includes interviews with our Chairman and Project Manager.

Boyne Boat trips

A great new boats trip service called Boyne Boats operates trips along the Oldbridge section of the Boyne Navigation. They also operate trips along different sections of the River Boyne.

We have broken the 1,000 "Like" Milestone on our groups Facebook page and approaching the 1,100, feel free to add your "Like" to keep this number growing. Photos of our more recent workdays can be viewed there along with news and additional information that takes place along the Boyne canal/ navigation section.

If anyone who we meet at either the Irish Maritime Festival or Sonáirte, Duleek, Slane, from our Open day or anyone else is interested in coming along on Saturday you are more than welcome. A free lunch is available to all volunteers (and its said such doesn't exist :-)

The Boyne Trail/ Greenway was officially opened back in the middle of April 2014 with cyclists, runners, walkers and all others making great use of it. Extensions the route are in the works but since it is separate from us you might be best to follow these guys

Branch Burgee - onsale

Our branch held a competition in Spring 2013 to created it's our burgee. James Leahy came up with the winning design which our branch adopted and we had a number of these burgees made. These burgees can be bought for the small sum of only €20, our branch benefits from the sale of each burgee. Enquires can be directed towards our group's contacts webpage. This burgee can alternatively be bought from the IWAI shop.

Restoration Progress

The project has been in progress since 2003. The work to date has been concentrated on the canal section from the sea lock at Oldbridge to the turf lock at the Horse Bridge, approximately 0.5 miles to the east of the upstream junction with the River Boyne. This work has involved significant voluntary effort and has resulted in the restoration of a considerable length of navigable waterway.

Branch Awards

Our branch received the Ellison Award of appreciation from the Meath Association of An Taisce in 2012. We were presented with a "certificate" and plaque. The plaque is going to be mounted at the Sealock in the near future.

In 2010 our branch received an award in recognition of our Excellence in Community Commitment from Drogheda Chamber for our work.

Inland Waterdays Association of Ireland wrote a really insightful article about the history of the canal along with the progress the branch was making a couple of years ago, this article can be found here.

Our work gets regular mentions in local papers and other local media.
