He managed to end up with four black sacks full. We are hoping Meath County Council might be able to help relieve us of our recent boundy for free.

These days weren't lost as we carried out a litter pick on the Oldbridge section of the Navigation. Worked planned for the day will be continuation of pointing of the stone wall bank on the Lower Newgrange section, weather dependent. Due to the poor expected weather on the day and only a few volunteers who reported for duty, it was decided to carry out a litter pick on the Oldbridge section of the Navigation.

We started to collect litter on the water surface. Since water levels were so low and clear it allowed for the inspection along the bottom of a part of this section of the waterway. We found a collection of traffic cones which must have been dumped into along time ago. We managed to recover 12 of these cones. They were heavily limescaled and battered. We went back to reclaim more of these cones after lunch time but sadly the forecast rain started to come down. We abandoned our efforts, packed up our things and finished up our workday :-(

It is expected that it will take another two workparties before will have this particular job finished.

A new recruit (Fergal) we have gained through our Facebook page dedicated some of his Wednesday morning attempting to find barges which are located in the River Boyne, StackallenHe was blindly trying to find the boats but sadly he didn't have any success!!

Photo: This shows the wall which forms the bank of the early Staleen section just above Staleen Lock (Lock 3) on the canal. A lovely protected structure that been a horse bridge can be seen in the distance. As you can see from the picture a stone has fallen out of the wall and sadly this is repeated in a number of section of the wall.

Workparty to be held Saturday 7th June 2014 at 09:30, at the Oldbridge Sealock. Our work will be focused on both the Oldbridge Sealock (Lock 1) and Staleen (Lock 3). It is planned to once again erect the sign which was formerly at the Oldbridge Sealock. We havenít done any work up at Staleen Lock and environs in over 18 months so some of us will be going up there to see what work needs to be done.

As planned the last day topsoil was laid and grass seeds was spread over the Estuary wall section of the Oldbridge Sealock. The railings on the Estuary wall steps around that section of the wall was installed.

Photo of the installed railings at the Estuary steps and wall can be found on our branch Facebook page, Facebook page.

Other work maybe done depending on the number of people that show up.

Some of our members took place in a Volunteer Ireland open day in Drogheda last Saturday. The great work which has taken place at the Sealock in the recent past can be found on our Facebook page.

The Greenway was officially opened 2 Wednesdays back and going off the traffic I need before it was in place it going to be one busy passage way with cyclists, runners, walkers and all others that may use it.

The boardwalk is now open for cyclists, walkers and all others to use. It isn't officially open yet but that is imminent I am sure.

Hope to see you along on Saturday!!,
    Eugene Carbery, Project Manager,
    Boyne Navigation Branch.

    Workparty 26th April 2014

Boyne branch are planning to hold a workparty this coming Saturday, 26th April, 2014 commencing 9:30 a.m. at the Sealock, Oldbridge.

Work planned to take place this Saturday continuation of building up the wall at the estuary end of the Sealock. Topsoil is also expected to be spread at the area above the estuary wall which is been built. A call once again for all available volunteers and members to come along.

Our branch branch Facebook page has already gained 120 friends not bad going considering it is less than 2 weeks old.

An extra three steps were added to the stairway of the estuary wall at the mouth of the Sealock, Oldbridge. The correct step level has now been reached. The level of the walkway leading to the steps was been built up also the last day. The soil areas between the canal end of the lock and area next to the Sealock chamber have now been cleared of rubble and topsoil was spread on both. Grass seed was then spread on these areas.

The boardwalk is now open for cyclists, walkers and all others to use. It isn't officially open yet but that is imminent I am sure.

Hope to see you along on Saturday!!,

    Workparty 19th April 2014

Work Party will take place Saturday, 19th April, 2014 commencing 9.30 a.m. at the Sealock, Oldbridge.

The focus this Saturday will be to finish preparing the kerbed area between the Greenway cycle track and the Sealock paving. We have topsoil on site but its just a matter of clearing the area of rubble and spreading out the topsoil. If we have more than enough volunteers I am sure they could be set to painting the lockgates.

Our branch decided at our last committee meeting to adopt a Facebook page, this has since been implemented and has grown to one hundred friends already, not bad considering it has only been setup since last Friday!!!

Six extra steps were added to the stairway of the estuary wall at the mouth of the Sealock, Oldbridge. The Sealock is shaping up nicely for an imminent opening.

Additional boardwalk was completed at the Greenway section in the area between the end of the sheephouse rd and Rathmullen road. None of the boardwalk including this section is open to traffic due to the ongoing work but its opening will be imminent.

Hope to see you along on Saturday!!,

    Workparty 29th March 2014

Work Party will take place this coming Saturday, 29th March, 2014, commencing at 9.30 a.m. at the Sealock, Oldbridge.

Possible planned work will consist of finishing the paving, stonework on the steps, estuary entrance wall and painting if the weather permits.

A great start was made on the estuary wall the last day, as can be noted from the photo. The paving on the canal end is pretty much complete with the slabs needing to be laid. Measurements were been taken up at the Guardlock.

The Greenway now is bordered with railings between the Ramparts and the estuary end of the Sealock. The contractors were even working on Saturday during our last workparty thus showing how dedicated they are to the project. The boardwalk wasn't open as parts of the surface were lifted and barriers placed across it at stages.

Hope to see you along on Saturday!!,
    Seamus Costello, Secretary,
    Boyne Navigation Branch.

Photo: is of Fiachra in thinking mode!!! A suggested comment for the photo already has been "This is what's known as a Hard Hat lads. Very useful when you're working with lots of big, heavy rocks." :) I won't repeat what the other suggested comment was but it involved a telling off from "the boss" and been hung off the nearest tree.

    Workparty 25th Febuary 2014

A Work Party will take place Saturday, 22nd February, 2014 at the Ramparts, Athlumney, Navan commencing at 9.30 a.m. This will be our last workparty to be held before the habitat's directive comes into place so it will mean "all hands on deck", to borrow a maritime phrase.

People can park their car's next to the canal at the bottom of the lane.

Alot of heavy work was done last week consisting of cutting trees or branches which were either impinging on the canal navigation or had simply fallen into the canal itself, these were then removed, cut up and removed. The section is looking alot better after the work and a number of walkers complemented the work. Work will be similar to last Saturday and it is hoped to get it finished and the towpath cleaned up.

Tea, coffee, soup and sandwiches will be provided as usual.

Apologies in advance for the non-attendance of myself and Fiachra who will be sweating it out in the Park Hotel, Mullingar, on the branch's behalf !!!

Our branch welcomed along a number of new workers, one of them been the infamous "RampartsBoyneRiver" (Adrian, I think), he has been documenting changes that have been taking place along the Navan section of the canal over the last while. It was great to have him along and he sounded enthusiast to join in on the work we are doing down the other end of the navigation at the Sealock, Oldbridge. He has some really nice photos of the Boyne canal and River.

Hope the guys are as successful this Saturday!!,
    Seamus Costello, Secretary,
    Boyne Navigation Branch.

    Workparty 15th Febuary 2014

Workparty to be held on Saturday, 15th Febuary starting at 09:30. Sadily this has been only our second workparty this year due to the heavy rain over the last number of weeks. We will be based up in Athlumney, Navan. Lots of work is planned for the day so we hope as many volunteers that are available will give a helping hand. To quote the former boss "the Boyne canal rats are back at work".

    The proposed work will comprise:
    1. The cutting of over growth: trees, foliage that overhangs the canal.
    2. The clearance of fallen trees and other such dead growth in the canal.
    3. Once this is brought onto the bank, it will be loaded onto transport and removed from site.

People can park their car's next to the canal at the bottom of the lane.

    See ye on Saturday,
    Eugene Carbery, Project Manager,
    Boyne Navigation Branch.
